How To Move Installed Applications To Another Location

Software, Tips & Tricks November 12th, 2007

Consider this scenerio: You have some programs installed in drive C and now the drive is running out of space. You wish to reallocate the programs to another drive but cut-pasting the programs won’t work. You don’t even have the setup files of those programs, so you can’t reinstall them on another drive. What will you do? Enter Application Mover

Application Mover is a tool that relocates installed programs from one path to another on your hard disk. Application Mover takes files found in the path specified in the ‘Current Path’ field and moves them to the ‘New Path’ path. Application Mover scans the windows registry for references to files located in the ‘Current’ field and changes those references to the ‘New’ path. Application Mover also scans all windows shortcuts in the Start Menu and adjusts path references to the new program location. Finally, *.ini and Install.log files present in the original program path are checked for strings matching the old path location. If found, these strings are changed to the new location. Confirmation dialogs are available if you enable the ‘Confirm changes’ checkbox . If a file is ‘busy’ and cannot be changed to the new location, a reboot prompt is offered. Pending changes are then completed after the reboot.

You can download the application Here. The downside though, that this is not freeware.

How to Set A Video Background in Windows XP and non-Ultimate Vista.

Tips & Tricks November 11th, 2007

here is a cool alternative to adding video to your desktop background without hogging system resources and memory. It will work in any Windows Vista version and Windows Xp. Here’s how it goes.

1. Download and install VLC Player for Windows.
2. Run VLC Media Player, go to Settings -> Preferences, expand Interface and click on wxWidgets. In the bottom right corner of “wxWidgets interface module” window, click on “Advanced options” to show advanced settings. Then uncheck the Taskbar check box in order to remove VLC Player title from the taskbar while the program is running. Check Systray icon if you want to enable Systray (system tray or notification area) icon instead.
3. Next, expand Video -> Output Modules and then select Direct X. In bottom right corner of DirectX Video Output window, check the Advanced Options check box in order to see all the settings available.

4. Check and tick the “Enable wallpaper mode” check box.
5. Then, select Playlist and then check or tick the Repeat current item checkbox.
6. Press “Save” button when done.
7. Open and play any video that you would like to set as motion wallpaper in VLC Media Player.
8. If the video hasn’t yet been set as desktop background, right click on the video and click on “Wallpaper”.
9. The video or movie will be set as if it’s DreamScene motion desktop background wallpaper.

Now important thing is to configure VLC Player to loop the video . This can be done by simply clicking on View then select Playlist. Now highlight the video that is playing and by clicking on Repeat One or Repeat All button .

But make sure the video format is supported by VLC Player such as MPEG, AVI, MP4, WMV, FLV (Flash Video) and etc. If it isn’t simple convert it to the above files.

Another alternative is BS.Player. Just download and install the BS.Player. Run BS.Player and open your favorite movie or video clip that you would like to set as desktop background.
Then right click on the video playing on a window, and select “Desktop mode” on the options menu. Alternative, you can just press D shortcut key. Wow, your desktop is now playing video, without interfering with other desktop features.

Revert Your WordPress Incoming Links To Technorati.

Software, Tips & Tricks November 5th, 2007

If you have recently upgraded your WordPress installation to 2.3+, you would have noticed that the new Dashboard in Wordpress 2.3 no longer displays incoming links via Technorati, but instead uses Google Blog Search! this would have be fine if it displayed incoming links to your site from other sites, however, this is not the case, since Google Blog Search displays your own posts as incoming links, which of course isn’t practical at all, and makes it very hard for you to track back who’s actually linking back to you.

For the time being, Technorati does a better job than Google blog search, Having said that, and to resolve this issue, you can download a plug-in created just for this purpose called Nusuni Technorati Links Wordpress plugin, which will completely replace the Google Blog Search feature with Technorati again.

Another nice feature about this plug-in is that you can configure the Blog URL so that if you have Wordpress installed at youdomain.com/blog, but you want to see all links coming to yourdomain.com, you can configure this option.

Almost all the contemporary wireless internet providers are loaded with tools and services to form an extensive wireless network beaded with high ended equipment, wireless routers to have an up and running state of the art wireless internet anywhere. How to track the original location of an email via its IP address

Tips & Tricks November 3rd, 2007

Here’s a quick how-to guide on how you can track email to it’s originating location by figuring out the email’s IP address and looking it up. I have found this to be quite useful on many occasions for verification purposes since I receive lots of emails daily due to my blog. Tracking the IP address of an email sender does require looking at some technical details, so be ready to dig your heels in!

There are basically two steps involved in the process of tracking an email: find the IP address in the email header section and then look up the location of the IP address.
Finding the IP address of an email sender in GMail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook

Let’s go ahead and take a look at how you would do this for Google, Yahoo and Outlook since those are the most popular email clients.

Google’s Gmail

1. Log into your account and open the email in question.

2. Click on the down arrow that’s to the right of the Reply link. Choose Show Original from the list.

Now here’s the technical part that I was telling you about earlier! You need to look for the lines of text that start with “Received: from“. It might be easier to simply press Ctrl + F and perform a search for that phase. You’ll notice that there are several Received From’s in the message header. This is because the message header contains the IP addresses of all of servers involved in routing that email to you.

To find the first computer that originally sent the email, you’ll have to find the Received From that’s farthest DOWN. As you can see from the above image, the first one is from a computer called “aseem” with the IP address 72.204.154.191. Then it was routed to my ISP’s server at eastrmmtao104.cox.net and so on and so forth till it got to your email server.

The computer aseem is the name of the computer and that’s its public IP address! I’ll go through Yahoo and Outlook before talking about tracking the location of that IP address.

Yahoo Mail Beta

1. Log into your account and open the email (if you’re using Yahoo Mail Beta with the new preview interface, make sure you double-click on the email so that it opens in a new tab)

2. At the top right, you’ll see there is a drop-down option where Standard Header is selected by default.

3. Click on it and choose Full Header.

Again, you’ll see the same information as before, just in a different window:

Microsoft Outlook

1. Open the email in Outlook by double-clicking on it

2. Go to View at the top menu (the menu options for the email, not the main Outlook window) and choose Options.

You’ll get a dialog box where you can set the message options and at the bottom you’ll see the Internet Headers box. For some silly reason, the box is very small and you have to scroll a lot, so it’s best to simply copy and paste the text into Notepad to view it more easily.

Tracking the location of an IP address

Now that we have our originating IP address of 72.204.154.191, let’s find out where that is! You can do this by perform a location lookup on the IP address. My favorites are IP2Location and GeoBytes IP Locator.

GeoBytes gave me a big map of New Orleans, LA along with a bunch of other information about the location itself.

IP2Location also gave me the same information pretty much, including the ISP (Cox Communications).

If you want more information, you can do a WHOIS database search also. My favorite one is the ARIN WHOIS Database Search. This will give you information on who hosts that IP address and their registration information. You can always contact them to try and find more information on that particular IP address.

Tracking the original location of an email sender can be a bit tricky via a wireless internet service. The task is even tougher if the sender is using a well-protected business wifi. Around the world, wireless internet coverage provided by the industry leaders like at&t wireless or the one that is still known by some people as Rogers AT&T, rogers wireless, come with some extra security features for the same concern. Recently cingular wireless introduced a few new network adapters in an effort to enhance the security over the wireless networks.

The fastest and easiest way to upgrade WordPress. (or install it).

Tips & Tricks November 2nd, 2007

And now Ladies and Gentlement, I give you my Tech Tip of the day number God knows what. Here is how you can install and/or upgrade your WordPress Installation in less than 4.52 minutes.

1. Upgrading:
Upgrading WordPress can be a little bit of an annoying process, since it involves a lot of steps such as backing up the database (just in case), deactivating all the plugins, downloading the newer version, uploading the new files and overwriting the old ones, and then reactiving the plugins, and hoping all goes well. however there is a way in which you can upgrade your WordPress installation in less than 1 minute, with little to no effort.

I am talking of course about the called WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin by Techie Buzz. I’ve tried it on a couple of secondary WordPress sites that i operate (for testing purposes) and it worked like magic. I seriously could not believe how fast and easy it was.

In order to use this plugin, simply upload and activate it. Once activated, you will see a new option under Manage called Automatic Upgrade. The plugin, through a wizard like interface, will walk you through all the steps needed to upgrade WordPress, including checking over your current installation, putting your blog into maintenance mode, and even grabbing the latest version of WordPress from the official download page, and all you have to do is click click. thats all.

If you have a standard WordPress installation, I highly recommend using this plugin to keep your WordPress software up to date.

2. Installing:
This one might need an itty bitty amount of work at your end, but it is equally fast and easy as the AWUP above. all you need to do here is create the database and assign a username/password to it. (if you don’t know how to do that, you can check out the WordPress detailed instructions site, and it’ll explain everything to you step by step.) thats it. now head over to Vladimir Ghetau’s Wordpress Web Installer. fill in the form, and you’re done. can’t get easier than that now can it? this web installer however currently installs WordPress version 2.2.1, but thats no problem, is it?

I have to mention though, that I personally believe in getting down and dirty with things, i.e: I like to do everything manually, not that there’s anything wrong with using the automated processes above, but thats just me, i like to stay on top of things, since I believe that doing everything by hand reduces that chance for errors and what not.

So, thats it. enjoy.

How to creat an invisible folder.

Tips & Tricks November 2nd, 2007

Today I am going to teach you this neat little trick, how to create an invisible folder without the use of any third party software, its simple and fast and who knows, it might come in handy

Ok, first create a new folder, windows by default will name it New Folder:

delete that and hold alt+0160 and press Enter.

now you will notice the folder is there but it has no name, good.

Step 2, right click on the folder and choose properties, go to Customize and click Change Icon, navigate to the right a bit until you find a row of 4 invisible icons:

choose one and click on OK and Ok to complete the process.

and thats it, you now have a fully functional invisible folder you can hide your stuff in
naturally if you can’t remember the location of the folder, just hit ctrl+a and you should be able to spot it.
