The Forever Flashlight!

Technology November 9th, 2007

The Forever Flashlight uses no batteries or bulbs. Instead it uses Faraday’s Principle of Induction and a bright LED to produce light without batteries. The light is shaken for about 30 seconds to recharge a capacitor and it will then provide about 5 minutes of light. As the light is shaken, a magnet passes through a metal coil generating electricity. During prolonged use it can be shaken for 10-15 seconds every 2 or 3 minutes.

The light requires no maintenance so it can be left in your home or car for a longtime but will still be ready to produce light. The bright LED will last for thousands of hours and does not burn-out like a typical lightbulb - it should never need replacement.

Great features of the Forever Flashlight:

* Available in Regular, Medium or Micro-size
* Super bright blue/white LED
* Never needs batteries
* Never needs bulbs
* Waterproof
* Floats in water
* Visible for up to one mile
* Great for cars, boats, server rooms, and all emergency kits
* Dimensions: 11.25″ x 1.5″ dia. for Regular, 6.5″ x 1″ dia. for Micro
* Weight: 11.8 oz (335 grams) for Regular, 3.6 oz (102 grams) for Micro.

Age-verifying cigarette machines?

Technology November 3rd, 2007

Ah the Japanese, where would we be without them! This is very interesting, Kyoto-based vending machine maker and marketer Fujitaka Co. has developed a new kind of machine that integrates a camera and face-recognition software to judge whether purchasers look old enough to buy cigarettes.

The vending machine has an “adult recognition” button, and when this is pressed a tiny camera takes a photo of the customer and analyzes certain features such as wrinkles and sagging around the eyes and mouth as well as the frame of the potential buyer’s body to determine a general age.

In a test with 500 people ranging in age from their teens to their 60s, this software was able to identify adults with 90% accuracy.

Distinguishing teenagers from twenty-somethings is more difficult. So when the software cannot make a judgment call, the customer needs to insert a license to prove their age. If the machine can make a match with the license photo, it will sell cigarettes.”

New currency for space travellers.

Technology November 2nd, 2007

Good news Everyone!
Scientists have finally come up with an answer to a question thats been haunting me for years, which is: when we go start travelling into space and boldly going where no man has gone before, which currency are we going to use? since Metal coins could damage sensitive electrical equipment if left to float free in space, and the magnetic strip on cards would be wiped by cosmic radiation. Dilemma!

Well, Scientists have come up with a new currency designed to be used by inter-planetary travelers. It is called the Quasi Universal Intergalactic Denomination, or Quid.

It is designed to withstand the stresses of space travel and has no sharp edges or chemicals that could hurt space tourists, and was made from the polymer used in non-stick pans, and naturally, as you can see, Different value “coins” come in different sizes and colours.

It was designed for the foreign exchange company Travelex by scientists from the National Space Centre and the University of Leicester.

Thank God thats taken care of now eh? :tongue:
