Good Keywords: Get Your Keywords Right

News December 1st, 2007

goodkeywordsinterface As any successful webmaster / blogger will tell you, the key to a successful website is to get the right keywords. The keywords are the words that search engine users will use to find websites that they are looking for. So it pays to get it right, whether you are optimizing your website meta-tags, post titles or working out which keywords to use in your next Google Adwords campaign. You can’t do a slapdash job otherwise you’ll find that your nice shiny new website doesn’t get any visitors.

I used to find it extremely tiring researching keywords. I’d be sitting in front of Google or Yahoo for ages typing in random phrases and seeing what popped up. I’d be looking at places such as Technorati or Google Blog Search and I would still be clueless as to what keywords I should be using to make my blog more accessible to the discerning web surfer. But then I discovered a neat free little program called “Good Keywords” which takes all the stress out of the process. It’s such a great program that Search Engine Watch called it “a keeper”.

The website that offers “Good Keywords” also offers various other keyword-related programs such as Keyword Pad (for managing long lists of keywords) and Keyword Explorer which analyzes keyword phrases. But the real jewel in the crown is “Good Keywords”.

“Good Keywords” is a tiny 500kb program which gives you several options when you start it. The main feature - and the real goldmine in my opinion - is the “Keyword Suggestions” box. This links to Yahoo and Overture and when you enter a keyword in the box, it goes to Yahoo and Overture and instantly brings back LOTS of variations of the keyword along with the number of search engine queries for those keywords over the past month (the most popular keyword phrase being at the top).

By entering your keywords into this program, you can find out right away the search query habits of Internet users so you can know which keywords to include and which ones to exclude. Not only it can make your titles more Google / Yahoo friendly, but also can make a financial difference for the better if you are running an Adwords campaign where the wrong keywords could end up costing you a lot of wasted money.

Other options that the program gives you includes possible misspelled variations of a keyword, a keyword phrase builder, a website analyzer (which tells you the site’s PageRank as well as the number of other sites that link to it) and a keyword organizer.

“Good Keywords” is freeware and it never nags you to register for anything and it never asks for an email address. It is simply just a great little tool which fills a big need. This is most definitely a keeper on my PC.

US broadband will reach maximum capacity in 2010

News November 28th, 2007

Nemertes Research recently predicted that the broadband infrastructure in the United States will reach maximum capacity by 2010. The study says that the system will collapse because of this overload, but, more importantly, says the situation is inevitable unless there is a 60 to 70 percent increase in investment in broadband infrastructure. The report, titled, The Internet Singularity, Delayed: Why Limits in Internet Capacity Will Stifle Innovation on the Web, says that, although the dynamic nature of the Internet will prevent a total breakdown, users will experience “Internet brownouts,” which are defined as periods of low connectivity speeds. According to Nemertes Research, the situation will definitely hurt innovation on the Internet — a lack of reliability of connection speeds, will likely mean another Google orYouTube will have difficulty making inroads.

The study points out that the lack of investment could be holding back the time at which the internet reaches a ‘singularity’ (a point at which accelerating change creates an unpredictable outcome, such as the Internet becoming independently sentient). Nemertes Research expects the corporate and personal demand for Internet connectivity to grow exponentially during the next two years. Nemertes estimates that the financial investment required by access providers to bridge the gap between demand and capacity ranges from $42 billion to $55 billion, or roughly 60-70 percent more than service providers currently plan to invest. Damn, may be it’s a good time to start talking about this issue - or ban every YouTube-like website. :)

The broadband capacity of a geographic area is the direct determinant of the internet phone system service in that area. Modern internet telephones are compatible with the upgradeable internet phone software used by major service providers like vonage and the market leader, skype phone. Thanks to the latest advancements, telecommunication wonders like free long distance calls and voip conference are made possible for the masses.

Google finishes Gdrive, personal internet storage

News November 28th, 2007

Internet titan Google has announced plans to launch a file storage system, which will enable users to securely save files on the Google hard drive. The files will be available for access via the Internet, from computers and mobile devices anywhere in the world. The service will offer a yet-to-be-specified storage amount for free, with additional storage space available for purchase. The announcement of the storage service is apparently not new news, as rumors had been circulating in the past about a similar service, dubbed as Gdrive. The Wall Street Journal sees this new product as a way for Google to increase their stakes in the long-time rivalry with Microsoft.

There has been some concern regarding the issue of privacy, with the user’s files being posted on the internet, and will be accessible to hackers. A Google spokeswoman addressed this concern, saying “It is certainly approached with the utmost sensitivity on our end…We have extensive safeguards in place currently to protect our user data and we have a very strong track record in this regard.” Google has also assured attention towards copyright issues, as the storage service will allow file sharing, hence risking the illegal distribution of music and other copyrighted products.

More details available in WSJ report.

The idea of Gdrive resembles that of the storage quota on dedicated servers available on an extensive webhosting net. Among various cheap hosting services available, bluehost holds a mix of the features with optimal benefit as does 1and1 hosting service for a premium cost. Many web hosting review sites show the ranking of the whole lot of hosting services for data as well as best image hosting services.

Apple’s Leopard vulnerable to security flaw

News, Software November 23rd, 2007

Intego, makers of VirusBarrier and other Mac OS X security software, on Wednesday issued an alert regarding a flaw in the way that the Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard” handles files that have been downloaded from the Internet. This affects Mail attachments, according to Intego. The problem was identified on Tuesday by U.K.-based Heise Security, which says it’s identical to a security flaw that first came to light in Tiger Mail back in March, 2006 — a security flaw that Apple actually patched in Tiger, but has apparently reappeared in Leopard (causing Heise to refer to it as “the same old error”).

Heise says that a file downloaded from the Internet can contain a resource fork that will cause the Mac to open the file (if it’s double-clicked by a user) in Terminal, automatically executing a shell command sequence. The file is “disguised” as another type of enclosure; in Heise’s example, a JPEG image. Apple has not yet released a security update for this issue, according to Intego. Intego has updated the virus definitions file used by its VirusBarrier X4 software to work around the issue. The definitions file is dated Nov. 21, 2007. A popular argument of almost every Apple fan saying that Mac considers no security risk is becoming a history…

Mozilla rolls out Firefox 3.0 Beta 1

News, Software November 22nd, 2007

Mozilla Corp. late Monday released the first beta of Firefox 3.0, but continued to warn most users to stick with production Version 2.0. “We do not recommend that anyone other than developers and testers download the Firefox 3 Beta 1 milestone release,” Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s interface designer, said in a note posted to the company’s development center. “It is intended for testing purposes only.” But while the official word was for users to stand clear, Beltzner’s personal recommendation was a lot less intimidating. “It’s a preview release, so use with caution and don’t expect your add-ons to work without some magic; but between you and me, I’ve been running on this ‘developer preview’ for at least three months, and have never looked back,” he said in a post to his own blog.

Beltzner also touted several of the improvements in Firefox 3.0, including new security features and tools, a redesign of the bookmarking and browser history and numerous back-end platform enhancements, but he said they all require more testing and user feedback. The company has posted a more complete list of new features in the release notes it added to its Web site Monday. On the security side, Firefox 3.0 adds malware check, a phishing filter-like feature that warns users attempting to reach a URL blacklisted for suspected malicious code hosting; one-click site information that displays site ownership; fixes for vulnerabilities in plug-in updating; and integration with antivirus software and Windows Vista’s parental control settings.

Mozilla also claimed that it has fixed more than 300 individual memory leaks and added a new cycle collector to eliminate other memory issues. Firefox has a reputation for leaking memory consuming large quantities the longer it’s left running, and ultimate slowing down its host computer although some of its developers have contested the claims, and even pegged the problem as one of perception. Most current Firefox plug-ins Mozilla calls them extensions will not work with Firefox 3.0, a stumbling block for some who might otherwise want to test the preview. “Users of the latest released version of Firefox should not expect their add-ons to work properly with this beta,” the beta’s release notes read. Firefox 3.0 Beta 1 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux in 21 language versions from Mozilla’s site.

Adsense Rolls Out Great New Features.

News November 7th, 2007

This is Excellent! Google Adsense has rolled out some new cool features into the AdSense management interface, which will enable the publisher to change the parameters of the Adsense block right from within their own account without having to replace the code on the website. publishers can now also preview the look of the Ad in real time as they make any wanted changes, such as the colors and size. another option enables publisher to preview how the ad will actually look like on the site itself.

I have already tested and replaced the old codes on my site with the new, it may take about 10 minutes for the new code to implement, I have noticed though that the new code is smaller than the old one, which of course is great!

Overall, this is a excellent improvement and gives publishers more control and makes the process of managing their ads much easier, simpler and faster.
