US broadband will reach maximum capacity in 2010
News November 28th, 2007
Nemertes Research recently predicted that the broadband infrastructure in the United States will reach maximum capacity by 2010. The study says that the system will collapse because of this overload, but, more importantly, says the situation is inevitable unless there is a 60 to 70 percent increase in investment in broadband infrastructure. The report, titled, The Internet Singularity, Delayed: Why Limits in Internet Capacity Will Stifle Innovation on the Web, says that, although the dynamic nature of the Internet will prevent a total breakdown, users will experience “Internet brownouts,” which are defined as periods of low connectivity speeds. According to Nemertes Research, the situation will definitely hurt innovation on the Internet — a lack of reliability of connection speeds, will likely mean another Google orYouTube will have difficulty making inroads.
The study points out that the lack of investment could be holding back the time at which the internet reaches a ‘singularity’ (a point at which accelerating change creates an unpredictable outcome, such as the Internet becoming independently sentient). Nemertes Research expects the corporate and personal demand for Internet connectivity to grow exponentially during the next two years. Nemertes estimates that the financial investment required by access providers to bridge the gap between demand and capacity ranges from $42 billion to $55 billion, or roughly 60-70 percent more than service providers currently plan to invest. Damn, may be it’s a good time to start talking about this issue - or ban every YouTube-like website.

The broadband capacity of a geographic area is the direct determinant of the internet phone system service in that area. Modern internet telephones are compatible with the upgradeable internet phone software used by major service providers like vonage and the market leader, skype phone. Thanks to the latest advancements, telecommunication wonders like free long distance calls and voip conference are made possible for the masses.
Google finishes Gdrive, personal internet storage
News November 28th, 2007
Internet titan Google has announced plans to launch a file storage system, which will enable users to securely save files on the Google hard drive. The files will be available for access via the Internet, from computers and mobile devices anywhere in the world. The service will offer a yet-to-be-specified storage amount for free, with additional storage space available for purchase. The announcement of the storage service is apparently not new news, as rumors had been circulating in the past about a similar service, dubbed as Gdrive. The Wall Street Journal sees this new product as a way for Google to increase their stakes in the long-time rivalry with Microsoft.
There has been some concern regarding the issue of privacy, with the user’s files being posted on the internet, and will be accessible to hackers. A Google spokeswoman addressed this concern, saying “It is certainly approached with the utmost sensitivity on our end…We have extensive safeguards in place currently to protect our user data and we have a very strong track record in this regard.” Google has also assured attention towards copyright issues, as the storage service will allow file sharing, hence risking the illegal distribution of music and other copyrighted products.
More details available in WSJ report.
The idea of Gdrive resembles that of the storage quota on dedicated servers available on an extensive webhosting net. Among various cheap hosting services available, bluehost holds a mix of the features with optimal benefit as does 1and1 hosting service for a premium cost. Many web hosting review sites show the ranking of the whole lot of hosting services for data as well as best image hosting services.
Recover data from scratched CD/DVDs using IsoBuster.
Software November 26th, 2007
Do you have any important data in an optical disc that you can’t retrieve because the disc is scratched? Have you ever tried copying movies from a DVD only to find that it stops at 98%? And when you click Cancel, the whole file disappears. I have a solution to all of these problems.
The solution is IsoBuster, arguably the best data recovery software ever. I have been using this for years, and I can’t believe I didn’t write about this earlier. Well, IsoBuster, as I already mentioned is a data recovery software that supports all CD / DVD / BD / HD DVD formats and all common file-systems. It’s more than just a data recovery tool. It’s a complete suite to take care of all CD copying operations. The publisher explains:
“By better Error handling and several retry-mechanisms IsoBuster has a fair chance of recovering your data. The use of alternative ways to get to the data means that you get the best out of your drive. Furthermore IsoBuster circumvents Windows and does everything by itself, it communicates directly with the devices and takes care of all the data interpretation. This means that it is not limited to what Windows can see and it is able to deal with all sorts of logical issues as well. As a result discs stay ‘readable’ after problems, such as a Buffer Under-run or a failed disc finalisation, and all common file-systems, even the ones not supported by Windows are recognized and interpreted by the program. The program is however not limited by the file-system standards, it copes with a vast range of possible issues, hard coded or via virtual intelligence and on top of this it is able to build file lists based on file-signatures, independent from any file-system data.”

The best feature of IsoBuster is that it lets you keep a file that is only partially copied. Sometimes, a disc may be so badly scratched that it becomes impossible to read, even using IsoBuster. If you copy such a CD directly through Windows copy-paste function, Windows wouldn’t allow you to keep the partially copied file. Something that happens quite often while copying movie CDs. But with IsoBuster, you can copy and keep the file till the last bit that it was able to copy without error. That means that even if it encounters an impossible to read sector at 98% of file copy progress. You would still be able to run that 98% of the movie file.
IsoBuster also allows you to make iso copies of discs and save it various formats. With IsoBuster you can also selectively extract and copy tracks and sessions of a burned CD.
Important data can be saved and retrieved when needed in the form of custom-burned CDs and DVDs. Although free website templates are available online to everyone, a need to consult a web development agency arises when there is a complex requirement critical to the business success. For such a web design consulting agency a viable web design contract can earn big bucks along with the market repute. Even the professionals make a profitable use of the various pre-designed flash templates or any other website design tool like css templates as easily as does a novice user of his/her cv template in the word processor.
Apple’s Leopard vulnerable to security flaw
News, Software November 23rd, 2007
Intego, makers of VirusBarrier and other Mac OS X security software, on Wednesday issued an alert regarding a flaw in the way that the Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard” handles files that have been downloaded from the Internet. This affects Mail attachments, according to Intego. The problem was identified on Tuesday by U.K.-based Heise Security, which says it’s identical to a security flaw that first came to light in Tiger Mail back in March, 2006 — a security flaw that Apple actually patched in Tiger, but has apparently reappeared in Leopard (causing Heise to refer to it as “the same old error”).
Heise says that a file downloaded from the Internet can contain a resource fork that will cause the Mac to open the file (if it’s double-clicked by a user) in Terminal, automatically executing a shell command sequence. The file is “disguised” as another type of enclosure; in Heise’s example, a JPEG image. Apple has not yet released a security update for this issue, according to Intego. Intego has updated the virus definitions file used by its VirusBarrier X4 software to work around the issue. The definitions file is dated Nov. 21, 2007. A popular argument of almost every Apple fan saying that Mac considers no security risk is becoming a history…
Mozilla rolls out Firefox 3.0 Beta 1
News, Software November 22nd, 2007
Mozilla Corp. late Monday released the first beta of Firefox 3.0, but continued to warn most users to stick with production Version 2.0. “We do not recommend that anyone other than developers and testers download the Firefox 3 Beta 1 milestone release,” Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s interface designer, said in a note posted to the company’s development center. “It is intended for testing purposes only.” But while the official word was for users to stand clear, Beltzner’s personal recommendation was a lot less intimidating. “It’s a preview release, so use with caution and don’t expect your add-ons to work without some magic; but between you and me, I’ve been running on this ‘developer preview’ for at least three months, and have never looked back,” he said in a post to his own blog.
Beltzner also touted several of the improvements in Firefox 3.0, including new security features and tools, a redesign of the bookmarking and browser history and numerous back-end platform enhancements, but he said they all require more testing and user feedback. The company has posted a more complete list of new features in the release notes it added to its Web site Monday. On the security side, Firefox 3.0 adds malware check, a phishing filter-like feature that warns users attempting to reach a URL blacklisted for suspected malicious code hosting; one-click site information that displays site ownership; fixes for vulnerabilities in plug-in updating; and integration with antivirus software and Windows Vista’s parental control settings.
Mozilla also claimed that it has fixed more than 300 individual memory leaks and added a new cycle collector to eliminate other memory issues. Firefox has a reputation for leaking memory consuming large quantities the longer it’s left running, and ultimate slowing down its host computer although some of its developers have contested the claims, and even pegged the problem as one of perception. Most current Firefox plug-ins Mozilla calls them extensions will not work with Firefox 3.0, a stumbling block for some who might otherwise want to test the preview. “Users of the latest released version of Firefox should not expect their add-ons to work properly with this beta,” the beta’s release notes read. Firefox 3.0 Beta 1 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux in 21 language versions from Mozilla’s site.

What Is The Difference Between A Worm, Virus And Trojan Horse?
Articles, Tips & Tricks November 16th, 2007
Most of us don’t make a real difference between worm, virus and Trajan Horse or refer to a worm or Trajan Horse as a virus.
All of us know all are malicious programs that can cause very serious damage to PC. Exist differences among the three, and knowing those differences can help you to better protect your computer from their often damaging effects.
A computer virus is a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. Some viruses cause only mildly annoying effects while others can damage your hardware, software or files. Almost all viruses are attached to an executable file, which means the virus may exist on your computer but it cannot infect your computer unless you run or open the malicious program. A virus cannot be spread without a human action, (such as running an infected program) to keep it going. People continue the spread of a computer virus, mostly unknowingly, by sharing infecting files or sending e-mails with viruses as attachments in the e-mail.
A worm is a program or algorithm that replicates itself. A worm has the capability to travel without any help from a person from PC to PC and have ability to replicate itself on your system, so rather than your computer sending out a single worm, it could send out hundreds or thousands of copies of itself, creating a huge devastating effect.
A Trojan Horse is a destructive program that “working” as a benign application ( (like changing your desktop, adding silly active desktop icons) or can cause serious damage by deleting files and destroying information on your system. Trojans are also known to create a back door on your computer that gives malicious users access to your system, possibly allowing confidential or personal information to be compromised. Trojans do not reproduce by infecting other files nor do they self-replicate.
Added into the mix, we also have what is called a blended threat. Blended threats combine the characteristics of viruses, worms, Trojan Horses, and malicious code with server and Internet vulnerabilities. By using multiple methods and techniques, blended threats can rapidly spread and cause widespread damage. Characteristics of blended threats include: causes harm, propagates by multiple methods, attacks from multiple points, and exploits vulnerabilities. This combination of method and techniques means blended threats can spread quickly and cause widespread damage. Characteristics of blended threats include: causes harm, propagates by multiple methods, attacks from multiple points and exploits vulnerabilities. They are considered to be the worst risk to security since the inception of viruses, as most blended threats require no human intervention to propagate.
Therefore is very important to protect your PC with a good anti-virus software installed on your system with the latest fixes for new viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.
Additionally, you want to make sure your anti-virus program has the ability to scan e-mail and files as they are downloaded from the Internet. This will help prevent malicious programs from even reaching your computer. You should also install a a system that prevents unauthorized use and access to your computer (firewall as well). A good software firewall will protect your computer from outside attempts to control or gain access your computer, and usually provides additional protection against the most common Trojan programs or e-mail worms.
Increased security risk entails being careful while choosing among various web hosting services. A good choice for a webhosting domain is the one with high uptime, adequate storage space especially for the best image hosting and at least a minimal level of security tools for the commonly occurring maliciousness. Keeping in view the same factors, sometimes cheap hosting site is not the choice for many business users and make the standard service providers like dot5hosting or the one that combines the quality with economy such as bluehost a prime selection. One the most affordable yet features-rich names, anhosting, is already standing out among its competitors.
